Scope and Contents
This collection of audiotape recordings spans the period 1955-1986, though it primarily consists of reels dating from the years 1964 through 1975. The recordings deal with various topics relevant to Northwestern University as well as to contemporary social and political issues, though musical performances are also included. Notable speakers documented on the recordings include student leaders James Turner and Eva Jefferson; political figures Menachem Begin, Eugene McCarthy, John Kenneth Galbraith, William Clark, Otto Kerner, Charles Percy, Julian Bond, William Kuntsler, William Proxmire, Harold Washington, Newton Minow, and Everett Dirkson; and performers Dick Gregory, Keith Emerson, David Bromberg, Flora Purim, and the Gang of Four. Numerous individual topics, events, or shows are recorded over multiple reels. Some of these include: the Mock Political Convention; a Martin Luther King Documentary; Northwestern Answers Selma: the Civil Rights Rally; Inside Northwestern University; a Discussion of Playboy Philosophy; Live Coverage of Northwestern Homecoming 1964; the Dedication of the J. Roscoe Miller Campus of Northwestern University; the Waa-Mu Show; and 1970 Strike Coverage. Recordings are presented either as open reels or as Fidelipac cartridge systems.
