Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The addition to the English Department administrative records fills four boxes and spans the years 1961-1988. It is divided into three subseries: budget records; general files; and assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships files.

The budget records fill two folders and date between 1974-1983. The files contain material on staffing concerns such as salaries and the need for professors and lecturers; copier use; additional graders; work-study help; office supplies; telephone use and other miscellaneous budgetary items.

The general files form the major portion of the addition, date between 1961-1988, and are arranged alphabetically by topical subject headings. Materials within the folders are arranged chronologically by date. Of notable interest is the file on TriQuarterly Magazine, which mostly contains correspondence but also includes reports and budget information. Most of the TriQuarterly editors have come from the English Department, and their correspondence sketches the development of the magazine. Topics covered in the files include committee membership and meetings; tenure and contract hearings; course enrollment and scheduling; distribution requirements, with a discussion of their merits and implementation; curriculum information including planning, teaching loads and leaves of absence; honorary degrees; three notable sets of correspondence, one with Raymond Mack, one regarding the Herman Melville Project, and one about the journal Renaissance Drama; professorial activity reports, which were submitted each quarter and include general information about faculty members; recommendation letters for faculty and students seeking jobs or admission to other graduate schools; material detailing the relationship between Northwestern and the School of Criticism and Theory; Summer Session budget and scheduling; student complaints; nominations and proposals for the Kreeger-Wolf Distinguished Professorship; and other miscellaneous administrative matters.

The assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships files consist of two folders and cover the years 1962-1965 and 1983. The information concerns summer research grants and humanities grants awarded to graduate students and graduate programs.
