B06 FAWS: Lectures Notes and Useful Materials, 1992 - 1995

The Judith Levi Papers fill nineteen boxes, spanning the years 1969 to 2000. The bulk of the records consist of professional files accumulated during her work both in the Linguistics Department of Northwestern University and with other organizations and linguists between the years 1972 and 2000. The records are divided into Biographical Materials, Professional Files, Correspondence, Teaching Files, Linguistics Department Files, and Presentations and Publications Materials.

The Biographical Materials are made up of clippings and press releases, curricula vitae, and one file of to-do lists. The records span from 1975 to 2000 and are organized in reverse chronological order, with the most recent information first. Highlights of the materials include Levi's 1991 address during the CAS senior convocation and the cover page to the article, “Slow Death in Uptown,” from the Chicago Reader newspaper, about a 1985 court case involving coal miners afflicted with Black Lung Disease. Levi served as an expert witness in this trial.

Levi's Professional Files consist of memos, correspondence, minutes, and reports related to the various committees and organizations in which she took part. The files date from 1973 to 1997 and are organized in reverse chronological order.

This group also contains one certificate and an accompanying plaque from the Women's Studies Residential College (WSRC), thanking Levi for serving as Master from 1980-1982. Levi's files planning an awarded (but later declined) Fulbright lectureship in India are incorporated into this section.

Correspondence files span the dates 1969 to 2000 and are made up of both incoming and outgoing letters. General correspondence is in chronological order, while correspondence labeled by subject or specific individual is in alphabetical order by topic or surname. One pertinent file holds early communication documenting the beginning of Levi's career in linguistics. Two files hold correspondence about language and the law from 1983-1995.

Levi's Teaching Files make up the largest section of the series, and fill ten boxes. The records span the years 1972, beginning with her lectureship in Hebrew, to 2000. The records are made up of course administration files, course packets, reading lists, homework assignments and examinations, lecture and preparation notes, handouts, student papers and assignments, and individual student work files. The materials are organized alphabetically by course name, and then in reverse chronological order. Of special interest are files from three courses Levi developed about language and the law. The courses are Linguistics A01, Language and the Law (freshman seminar, developed 1983); Linguistics C24, Language and the Law (developed 1990); and Linguistics D11, Seminar in Linguistic Theory: Meaning and the Law (graduate seminar, developed 1995).

The Linguistics Department Files cover the years 1972 to 2000. The records include reports, minutes, correspondence, memos, program reviews, and department self-study files. The files are organized in reverse chronological order by decade, beginning with general department business and continuing with specific department subject files. Levi's department files are especially extensive from the years 1985 to 1989 when she was department chair, and include a good deal of information about the 1985-1986 department review.

Presentations and Publications files span the years 1972 to 1996, and consist of correspondence, editing files, drafts, copies of publications, title pages of publications, and notes. The records are organized into two subgroups, with presentations and papers first and publications second. Within the subgroups, the files are in chronological order. Of particular interest are the numbered publications files, from one to twenty-six, which list every publication of Levi's from 1972 to 1996. The Presentations and Publications materials also include records from the “Language in the Judicial Process” conference of 1985, and the editing files produced before the conference papers were published in 1990.
