Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This series consists of records of the Men's Interhouse Council (MIC). Among the records are copies of constitutions, beginning with the one adopted on March 10, 1932, and including a number of subsequent revisions.

The MIC records also include minutes of meetings held between February 26, 1936 and February 5, 1951. Subjects recorded in the minutes generally include intramural sports, social events, housing conditions, efforts to install vending machines in dormitories, and attempts to restrict dormitory lounges to residents. The issue of civil rights becomes an important topic in the minutes beginning in 1949

The minutes often include treasurer's reports and reports from the organization's representative on the Student Governing Board.

The records also contain correspondence between Bill Hartney, Interhouse Council President, and the organizers of the first annual Big Ten Dormitory Conference in 1949, as well as printed materials from the conferences of 1951 and 1953, and a report of the Career Conference held at Northwestern University in 1950.

Finally, the records include an "Idea File" containing correspondence between Men's Interhouse Council members concerning ideas for activities, and a folder of miscellany including: "The Asbury Plan," a proposal for organized campus government; copies of the "Student Bill of Rights;" the Report of the Student Governing Board Judiciary Committee November 28, 1951; a memorandum to future MIC publicity chairmen (May 29, 1950); and MIC recommendations pertaining to various matters made on April 30, 1951.
