Hospitals: Illinois: Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Chicago, 1954 - 1955

The Malcolm T. MacEachern papers fill 21 boxes, span the period 1907-1993, but date largely from the period of MacEachern’s most intense professional activity, 1922 to 1955. The papers are organized into the following categories: a draft text for the revision of The Medical Staff in the Hospital, biographical materials, materials collected for Laura Gertrude Jackson’s projected biography of MacEachern, subject files, general files, glass lantern slides associated with MacEachern’s professional lectures, oversized materials, and three-dimensional artifacts.

The draft text for MacEachern’s revision of The Medical Staff in the Hospital includes a partial version of that text, with annotations, arranged by page number.

General biographical materials, accompanied by photographs, are arranged within their folders in chronological order. Biographical materials include detailed travel diaries, clippings from newspapers and magazines, and correspondence and notes, all providing a wealth of detail concerning MacEachern’s personal life and professional activities.

Laura Gertrude Jackson, a longtime colleague of MacEachern, worked on his projected biography. Her drafts of that biography, along with pertinent correspondence and research notes, form a detailed record of MacEachern’s professional accomplishments.

Subject files include a chronologically arranged run of much of MacEachern’s surviving correspondence. Also found in this category are folders of information relating to MacEachern’s awards and recognitions, to his professional work in hospital administration and standardization efforts, and to his site visits and evaluations at numerous specific hospitals. There are several folders of material concerning MacEachern’s travels to and consulting work in South America and in Latin American countries and regions.

General files include clippings, notes, and scattered correspondence relating to MacEachern’s interests in medical care, hospital administration and hospital organization. These files also document MacEachern’s public addresses and his work on behalf of professional associations.

Glass lantern slides, used to illustrate MacEachern’s lectures and public addresses of a professional nature, are arranged topically and relate to broad themes in hospital work.

Oversized materials largely consist of certificates and other forms of recognition presented to MacEachern in recognition of his many professional accomplishments.

Finally, three-dimensional artifacts supplement some of the textual records which document MacEachern’s professional stature, particularly those of an academic nature.
