The Laurence L. Sloss papers are arranged in 31 boxes. The collection is divided into 15 series: Biographical Files; Educational Materials; Correspondence: Subject Files; Correspondence: Subject Files: American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG); Correspondence: Subject Files: Geological Society of America (GSA); Correspondence: Subject Files: Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists (SEPM); Correspondence: Subject Files: United States Department of the Interior; Geological Survey Divisions; Correspondence: Subject Files: Colleges and Universities; Correspondence: General; Teaching: Course Materials; Northwestern University Geology Department; Field Work; Professional Organizations; and Publications, Reprints and Reviews. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence with various people and organizations, records of field work, professional organizations files, and publications.

Biographical Files are arranged in Box 1, the folders are arranged in alphabetical order and by importance of the content. The folders contain mainly biographical data, diaries and pocket planners; they span the years from 1935 to 1996.

Educational materials are arranged chronologically in two boxes. They contain Sloss's dissertation manuscript and drafts by Sloss as a student of Stanford University. They span the period of 1932-1937.

Correspondence: Subject Files are arranged alphabetically by names of organizations and individuals. They span the years 1946 through 1996, and are located in Boxes 2-6.

Correspondence: Subject Files: American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) fill Boxes 6 and 7. The folders are arranged alphabetically by topical headings. They span the period 1956-1996.

Correspondence: Subject Files: Geological Society of America (GSA) span the years 1961 through 1996. The folders are arranged topically in alphabetical order. These files are located in Boxes 7 and 8.

Correspondence: Subject Files: Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists (SEPM) are arranged alphabetically by folder heading, and span the years from 1961 to 1993. The folders are located in Boxes 8 and 9.

Correspondence: Subject Files: United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey Divisions are arranged alphabetically by location of the Survey's geographic divisions. The files are located in Box 9 and span the period 1944-1992. Correspondence with the Geological Survey of the State of Illinois spans the years 1958 through 1985.

Correspondence: Subject Files: Colleges and Universities are located in Boxes 9 through 12. The files are arranged alphabetically by names of institutions; they span the years 1944 through 1995.

General Correspondence files span the years 1951 through 1996. The folders are located in Boxes 12 and 13.

The folders of Teaching: Course Materials are located in Boxes 13, 14 and 15. They span the years 1933 through 1980 and contain lecture notes, exam questions, transparencies, and some syllabus information.

Northwestern University Geology Department files are located in Boxes 15 and 16. The folders include materials relating to curricular projects, departmental handbooks and directories, student grade records (restricted), departmental committee records, and memorials pertaining to Sloss's deceased colleagues. The folders span the period 1946 through 1996.

Field Work files in Boxes 16-19 span the years from 1939 to 1996. Field work records contain maps, measured sections, logs, data sets, charts, sequences and photographs.

Professional Organizations files in Boxes 19-24 span the period 1955 through 1996. The folders contain agendas, correspondence, research proposals, newsletters, meeting reports as well as congress and conference materials.

Publications, Reprints and Reviews files ain Boxes 24-30 span the period 1942 through 1996. The folders contain Sloss's article and chapter manuscripts, reprints, journal and book reviews.
