Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Agnes Jones Cashman Papers fill eighteen boxes and are organized in four main categories: biographical materials, education files, correspondence, and teaching files, with small amounts in five additional categories.

The biographical files include curricula vitae, performance schedules and programs, and a wide variety of clippings, many of which relate to her dance performances.

The education files contain many lecture and reading notes. Also here is considerable research material related to her master's thesis.

The general correspondence primarily concerns her professional and academic activities. The "Angels, etc." material (Box 7, Folder 1) is a scrapbook containing letters honoring her twenty years of directing the Christmas pageant at the Glenview Community Church. The remainder of the subject correspondence is related to various dance organizations and to her work in the last half of the 1930s arranging a variety of performances and classes in Chicago by such dancers as Martha Graham and Harold Kreutzberg. Persons using the subject folders should also consult related dates in the general correspondence.

The teaching files include lecture and reading notes for physical education and hygiene classes. There is also a large number of folders dealing with specific aspects of dancing and various sports.

The papers also include six folders of notes, programs, and diagrams related to Jones' performances (Box 16, folders 2-7); a number of musical scores marked for dancing (Box 17, folders 1-3); a student scrapbook for a dancing course (Box 18, folder 3); and record sheets related to her master's thesis (Box 18, folder 2).
