Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Anthony Donato Papers fill 19 boxes in addition to eight oversize scrapbooks, spanning the period 1917-1992. Most of the material dates from 1945 to 1975. The papers are organized in four main categories: biographical materials, correspondence, music scores and publications. Within each category the files are arranged alphabetically by folder title unless stated otherwise.

The biographical materials include curricula vitae, clippings, programs of musical performances, a transcript of Donato's academic record at Eastman, and lists of his musical works and the dates of their performances. The scrapbooks located at the end of the collection contain substantial amounts of clippings and programs.

The general correspondence, arranged chronologically by date, deals mostly with Donato's musical works and performances, his teaching, and some personal matters. The subject correspondence pertains to his efforts to join the military services in World War II, his trip to Europe in 1965, several professional organizations, and publication of his book, Preparing Music Manuscript (1962).

The music scores, a substantial collection of drafts and finished productions, are housed in letter-size, legal-size, and dropfront oversize boxes. They are arranged within these three categories, according to their physical size. The scores then are filed alphabetically by title. The user should check each of the three categories to locate a particular score, as indicated in the container list.

The publications files consist primarily of a draft of his book, Preparing Music Manuscript.

The scrapbooks, arranged chronologically by date, contain a wealth of clippings (news items, accounts and reviews of performances, and interviews) and programs of concerts in which Donato took part or in which his compositions were performed.
