Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Martin H. Seifert Papers consist of one box, spanning the years 1928-1993. The bulk of the records consist of lecture notes, scholarly articles and papers presented to the medical community. The records are divided into six subseries: Biographical Materials, Education, Correspondence, Teaching Files, Speeches and Papers Presented, and Publications.

Biographical material spans the dates 1931-1993 and consists primarily of various awards and certificates, clippings about Dr. Seifert's work and his retirement in chronological order, and obituaries. The folder with personal data contains a 1966 copy of Seifert's birth certificate, as well as his curriculum vitae and bibliography. The obituaries folder contains an obituary for Seifert's wife, Alice Haller Seifert, as well as many obituaries for Seifert himself.

The Education folder contains two semester reports from 1928 and 1929 from the University of Illinois College of Medicine (Chicago); these are the oldest documents in the series.

The Correspondence folder is arranged chronologically and spans the dates 1931-1976, including a small amount of undated material. This correspondence includes letters to and from pharmaceutical companies and institutions regarding certain drugs, as well as letters regarding Seifert's employment as a professor at various schools. Also included in this folder is a letter to friends and patients announcing Seifert's switch from private practice to a position as Associate Director of the Student Health Service at Northwestern.

Teaching Files date from the late 1930s to 1967, including a substantial amount of undated lecture notes. This file includes information from one course taught at Loyola, as well as outlines and substantial lecture notes on a variety of topics for unidentified courses. Many of the notes which do contain dates contain several dates, often falling in the mid-1940s; this suggests that Seifert taught the same topics or classes for several years. The outlines are arranged chronologically and the dated notes are grouped roughly according to subject and in the order they were received, due to the variety of dates on many pages. The undated notes are also grouped roughly according to subject. In a few places among the handwritten notes are pages which are not in Seifert's handwriting, but which appear to be continuous with the rest of the notes.

The Speeches and Papers Presented folder is arranged alphabetically by title and spans the dates 1950-1969, including some undated material. This folder includes papers on topics such as mononucleosis and poliomyelitis, two diseases which are addressed throughout Seifert's work.

Publications are also arranged alphabetically by title, spanning the years 1939-1976, and including undated material. The scholarly articles folder contains drafts as well as final versions of some articles; additionally, many of the articles in this folder were presented as papers at one point and later published. Seifert's publications also include a small number of articles written for the general public.

The final folder in the box contains unidentified notes and papers, which may or may not have been written by Seifert.
