Iva Grace Howard Glazebrook (1899-1988) Scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The materials in the Iva Grace Howard Glazebrook scrapbook date between 1917 and 1920 and document her social life at Northwestern University. Images in the scrapbook include postcards, candid photographs, and figures cut out from photographic prints. They focus mostly on Howard's social environment as well as the scenery on campus. Most of the images are captioned but lack dates. The scrapbook follows a rough chronological scheme with several thematic pages.
The scrapbook has a purple cloth cover with a white āNā inscribed on the front cover. The black pages are loose and no longer bound between the two covers. Inserted in the back of the scrapbook are three colored loose pages that are half the size of the normal scrapbook pages. They appear to have been added to the scrapbook, but contain photos and cut outs from the same era.
The thematic pages include headings such as Music School Buildings, places of note around Evanston, Willard Hall, and Pi Delta Tau. Another thematic section of photographs that are noteworthy capture an outdoor pageant in which Howard participated as a dancer. The caption indicated that the pageant was a re-creation of an English tournament from the Middle Ages. Images of buildings in both Chicago and Evanston are interspersed throughout the scrapbook. The majority of the images, however, depict Howard's friends and social life.
Some of the pictures in the scrapbook are torn out and an entire half of a page is missing. Additionally, new labels with text were added at a later date which labeled additional images and at times covered up some of the original writing.
