Daily Record of Loan Grants and Collections
Scope and Contents
This series consists of one volume of loan disbursement and repayment records. The record was begun in 1929 when the reorganization of the University Council into the University Senate consolidated the financial aid function on the Chicago campus into one office. The Office of Personnel maintained this record. The volume is an original entry record arranged in chronological order. It is in a single entry format. Each entry gives the name of the student, the amount of the loan made or the amount of the principle and/or interest repaid. In the majority of cases there is a notation as to the school attended by the student. Each entry also notes the source of the loan funds, such as Patten Fund (for medical students), general funds, and department funds. The entries are not balanced at the end of each day, week or month nor at the bottom of each page. It is likely that other records existed on the Chicago office or in Evanston that contained balanced accounts, and that this volume was seen as a day book. Inside the front cover of this volume are three sheets summarizing the loans made in the Medical School for the academic year 1927/28. They indicate that records such as those in this series may not have been kept when each professional school had control of its own loan funds.
