Sundry Accounts Receivable General Ledger
Scope and Contents
In order to centralize its bookkeeping functions Northwestern created accounts for a variety of non-official events and activities that took place on the University campus, as well as for all official University business. This series consists of one volume of accounts receivable for various non-official functions. The volume is arranged alphabetically by the name of the account and divided by alphabetical tabs. Accounts were held with individuals, including faculty, staff and non-university persons; campus organizations, such as fraternities and sororities; and non-university entities, such as the Chicago Chemists Club and the American Economics Association.
Accounts covered University services provided to and facilities used by the account holder. A variety of non-university bills were entered under the same account. For example, bills for telephone service, catered food, and transportation were entered along with rent for university buildings under the same account. Entries were made chronologically and many give only a university voucher number and no description of the transaction.
