Scope and Contents

The Eric R. Lund papers cover Lund’s ancestry and life, including both his professional activities and other interests.

The Lund papers are arranged in ten series:

  • Biography. Materials related to Lund’s life, not including his professional activities. Important resources in this series are materials related to the Chicago neighborhood of Englewood during Lund’s youth (including neighborhood newspapers), and a substantial body of letters written during Lund’s service in the Army during World War II, in the Philippines and Japan. This series includes substantial information on Lund’s first wife, Florence Johannsen, and some information on his second wife, Grace Carlson.
  • Lund’s career in journalism and teaching. Lund worked principally at the Evanston review and Chicago daily news; the collection includes clippings, internal documents, correspondence and (especially for the Evanston review) background materials. The Evanston review materials contain substantial information on the culture and politics of Evanston in the 1960s. Lund taught at Northwestern University, Columbia College, and North Park College; the series includes syllabi, correspondence and other materials. This series includes significant materials collected during the writing of a history of First Federal Savings and Loan, which was never published
  • Correspondence. Letters to and from Eric and Florence Lund. Arranged in two principal groups: correspondence with Florence’s parents, and all other correspondence
  • Friends and associates. Materials (chiefly other than correspondence) related to friends and work associates of both Eric and Florence Lund
  • Frederick Lundin. Materials collected for a biography of the Illinois politician, which was never published
  • Swedish American heritage. Materials assembled by Lund on Sweden, and the contributions of Swedish immigrants to the United States
  • Travel. Eric and Florence Lund traveled chiefly to California (primarily the San Francisco region) and Scandinavia. This series contains correspondence, travel arrangements, restaurant menus, post cards, and other materials related to and collected during their trips
  • Journalism and writing. Materials on the subject of journalism, not related to any of the organizations for which Lund worked
  • Letters to the editor. A substantial body of information collected by Lund on the "letters to the editor" section of a newspaper, intended to be the subject of a book
