Northwestern University Library Scrapbooks, 1944-1975
Scope and Contents
Each of the five scrapbooks contains clippings of newspaper reports and articles concerning the development of the Northwestern University Libraries.
Box 1 covers the years 1944-1949; box 2, 1949-1952; box 3, 1952-1954; box 4 contains two scrapbooks, covering the years 1957-1969 and 1970-1975 respectively.

Biographical / Historical
The Northwestern University Library Scrapbooks span the years 1944-1975 and contain news clippings and articles that highlight important acquisitions to the library’s collections, exhibits and the planning and construction of the new library. Beginning in 1944 with the appointment of Jens Nyhom, University Librarian, 1944-1968 and continuing with the tenure of John P. McGowan, University Librarian, 1971-1992, the scrapbooks record momentous years of expansion and change. Of special note is the construction of the new library, opening in 1970, and the implementation of NOTIS, the Northwestern Online Total Integrated System, one of the first online catalog systems.
Language of Materials
The Northwestern University Library Scrapbooks contain five scrapbooks that detail the acquisitions of books and materials, exhibits and future planning of the University libraries and cover the years from 1944-1975.

The scrapbooks were donated by Susan Knox, secretary to John McGowan, in 1978; Acquisition #78-137.
