Abstract

Sheldon Harnick is a lyricist of numerous musical productions performed at broadway and other musical theatres and operas. As a major in violin at NU School of Music he began writing lyrics for the Waa-Mu show. In 1960 he won the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize, and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1993. He lives with his wife in New York City.

Correspondence files (two boxes) span the years 1964 through 2011 and contain mainly letters written by Sheldon Harnick to Jean Cantwell. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

One box with publications contains script books and articles relating to Harnick’s musicals. Folders span the years 1961 through 2011 and are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

Professional files (one box) contain vocal and musical selections, theatre programs, playbills, magazines, clippings, and one interview transcript. This subseries span the years 1947 through 2008. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

Professional Oversize files span the years 1961 to 2010. One dropfront contains scores of “Frustration,” and two scrapbooks. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

One folder (box 3, folder 7) contains a b/w photograph of Harnick and his family.
