Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Weiss’s “Memory and Fellowship Book,” a scrapbook colorfully documenting his Evanston Academy experiences and containing written information and souvenirs of various activities dating between 1912 and 1914. The scrapbook records the names of Weiss’s visitors, roommates, and female acquaintances; accounts for school and social functions, trips, and entertainments; and reflects Evanston Academy and Northwestern University athletic contests of the early 1910s. Included in the scrapbook are dance cards and ephemera from parties and social events; a 1913 football scorecard (Northwestern University versus Indiana); newspaper clippings and cartoons; and programs from musical and dramatic performances, both student-produced and professional. There are coupons from cigarette manufacturers, items reflecting the “I Am Going to Church Crusade” of circa 1913, programs from Northwestern University swim and track meets of March, 1914, and from the North Shore Music Festival of 1914. Other notable items include: a program from the Wilson Avenue (Chicago) Theatre’s “Refined Vaudeville” production, a Theobold’s Restaurant (Evanston) menu from 1913-1914, a 1913 calendar of Weiss’s activities, curricular items such as examination questions and one of Weiss’s written assignments, and Weiss’s 1914 diploma. Completing the scrapbook are photographs of Weiss’s friends and of his living quarters, photographs of the Heck Hall fire of February 24, 1914, and halftone views of the Northwestern University campus and of Northwestern University events.
