Scope and Contents
The Martha Lavey Papers fills five boxes and spans the years 1988-2017. Materials held in standard-sized boxes are arranged in alphabetical order, with materials of the same topic grouped together chronologically. For example, correspondence, photographs, and items related to Lavey’s studies at Northwestern University are listed together and in chronological order. Oversized photographs and artifacts are held in two oversized boxes and contain photographs from Steppenwolf Theatre Company productions, newspaper reviews of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and several of Lavey’s awards.

Biographical / Historical
Martha Lavey was born on February 20, 1957, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Robert and Patricia. She studied drama at Northwestern University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1979. Lavey returned to Northwestern for a master’s degree (1986) and doctorate in performance study (1994). Lavey became a Steppenwolf ensemble member in 1993 and performed in more than 30 productions with the company. She served as the Artistic Director from 1995 to 2015.
Martha Levy passed away on April 25, 2017.
