Scope and Contents

One folder containing biographical information in the form of Daily Northwestern articles as well as an article from Northwestern.

Folders 2-3 contain correspondence from the Northwestern University deans and the Northwestern University fraternities. The letters from the fraternities contain their standing orders for food to be delivered each night.

An addition, consisting of 41 dishonored checks given to Froehlig as payment for his sandwiches, as well as one more order from a fraternity, was added to the collection as folders 4-5.

Abstract

These papers document the career of William Froehlig, known to a generation of Northwestern students as "The Sandwich Man," who paid for his college education by selling snacks to students, and continued the business until his retirement.

Arrangement

The papers of William Froehling are organized into: clippings; and correspondence and dishonored checks.

Method of Acquisition

William J. Froehlig donated the contents of folders 1-3  to the Northwestern University Archives on February 27, 2013 (Accession No. 13-46). Froehlig donated additional material, contained in folders 4-5, to the Northwestern University Archives on April, 2013 (Accession No. 13-69).
