Scope and Contents

The Michael C. Janeway Papers fill five boxes and span the years 1970 to 1999. The papers mainly document the years of Janeway's career as dean of the Medill School of Journalism from 1989 to 1997.

Biographical files, spanning the years 1989 to 1997, include curriculum vitae, appointment letters, clippings, and press releases.

Publications and Writings date between 1972 and 1999 and contain articles, book reviews, and manuscripts, written by Janeway.

Alumni files span the dates 1989 through 1995. They include information about the Medill School's Alumni Board, fundraising, and grants. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order by topical headings.

Correspondence files, span the years 1983 to 1997.

Donations, Scholarships and Funds files, dating between 1990 and 1996, contain information about companies and institutions which provided financial support for scholars and students.

Proposals files span the dates 1990 through 1997 and contain materials about proposals for a Knight Chair in Journalism (by the Knight Foundation), a Knight and Kettering Foundation project (public life and the press), and a draft proposal for a chair in media studies. Folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title; materials within each folder are in rough chronological order.

Committees, Activities and Programs files, dating between 1980 and 1999, contain information about study abroad, visiting writers programs, and Janeway's committee activities.

Medill Journalism Program Inquiry files contain proposals for the rearrangement of the graduate program at the Medill School of Journalism. The dates span from 1970 to 1998.

Abstract

Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Michael C. Janeway served as professor of Journalism and dean of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University from 1989-1997. This series consists of biographical material, correspondence, publications and other documents relating mostly to Janeway’s time at Northwestern.

Arrangement

The Michael C. Janeway papers are organized into: biographical (arranged by topic); publications and writings (arranged by format); alumni files (in approximate chronological order); correspondence (arranged in alphabetical order by surname of correspondent, then by date when possible); donations, scholarships and funds (arranged in alphabetical order by topic, then roughly by date); proposals (arranged in alphabetical order by title, then roughly by date); committees, activities and programs; and Medill journalism program inquiry (arranged by date).

Method of Acquisition

The records of the dean of the Medill School of Journalism, Michael C. Janeway, were transferred to the University Archives on March 13, 2003 (Accession #03-127).
