Scope and Contents

The Charles R. Baker Family Papers are in three major sections, and are housed in one box containing six folders.

The papers of Charles R. Baker occupy four folders:

Biographical - includes a brief autobiography, a list of published and unpublished papers, a list of residences, and several clippings and biographical forms.

American Association of Orthodontists (1965-1969) - contains correspondence between Baker and other officers and members relating to the activities of the Association.

Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (1961-1968) - correspondence between Baker and other members, copies of reports and official documents.

Patents - drafts, printed specifications, and a patent certificate (no. 1,445,928, granted Feb. 20, 1923) for an automobile jacking device. Preliminary material is also here for a dentifrice.

The papers of Frank M. Baker occupy one folder. The bulk of this material consists of letters written by Frank to his father from late 1942 to early 1946 while Frank was in the Army Medical Corps. Many of these describe experiences in the Pacific Theater, especially the Philippines and Australia. Among the other items in this folder is a copy of Frank's will.

The folder of Francis R. Baker material contains one typescript of his complete Civil War diary (30-1/2 single-spaced, 6-1/2" x 10-1/4" pages) and a typescript of the first part. These describe his war experiences from his enlistment to his discharge on January 12, 1865, at Beaufort, South Carolina. and his return home. Francis was at the siege of Vickburg and also saw some heavy fighting in Georgia with Sherman. The original journal is in the Abraham Lincoln Presdential library and is described in OCLC record number 26827762.

Abstract

Charles Reeder Baker graduated from the Northwestern University Dental School in 1903. His career combined private practice (chiefly orthodontics) and positions at Northwestern University; he became Professor of Orthodontics in 1927. The Charles Reeder Baker family papers consist of biographical information on Baker, correspondence between Baker and members of professional societies, corresopndence from his son, Frank M. Baker (chiefly while serving in the Army Medical Corps in the Pacific during World War II), and a typescript of Francis R. Baker's Civil War journal.
