Scope and Contents

The Donald N. Frey papers span the years 1948 through 2010, comprise 44 boxes, and document Frey's work at Ford Motor Company, Bell & Howell, and Northwestern University. The papers include biographical information, correspondence, subject files, course files, papers pertaining to speeches and lectures by Frey, and Frey's writings and publications.

The first sub-series, biographical information and personal materials, spans the years 1951-2004. It includes articles and newsclippings relating to Frey and his work, as well as a selection of Frey's personal calendars and correspondence during the time of his appointment to the faculty at Northwestern. This sub-series is arranged chronologically.

The correspondence sub-series includes letters written and received by Frey between 1989 and 2005, during Frey's time at Northwestern. This sub-series is arranged alphabetically by last name, and primarily includes Northwestern-related correspondents.

Frey's subject files have been left largely in original order, and span the dates 1956-2006. This sub-series includes topical files kept by Frey relating mostly to work done by him on committees, boards, various proposals and investments. Some files also contain information related to research interests held by Frey. These files contain correspondence, writings, reports, and various publications. They are arranged in alphabetical order.

Frey's course files sub-series includes materials from courses taught by Frey from 1983 through 2006. Syllabi, tests, assignments, and administrative correspondence regarding the creation and management of courses can be found here. Completed assignments, class rosters, grades, and any graded materials have been removed from the collection. This sub-series is arranged alphabetically by class title.

The next sub-series, speeches & lectures, contains text, notes, and agendas for talks given by Frey from 1955-2001. These items are arranged chronologically. The talks deals primarily with engineering and technology, and were given throughout the country, though the majority of them were given near Evanston, Illinois in the mid-1980s through 2001.

Writings & publications, the final sub-series, contains drafts and clippings of articles and other writings by Frey. Article topics in this section pertain to engineering and industrial design. This sub-series is arranged chronologically.

Abstract

Donald Nelson Frey was born on March 13, 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, where his father was chief metallurgist for a John Deere plant. He attended Michigan State University for two years, but left to serve in the Army during World War II. After his return, he earned bachelor's (1947), master's (1949) and doctoral (1950) degrees in metallurgy from the University of Michigan.

This series was donated to the University Archives by Gary Summers (#00-143), Thomas McGuire (#10-125, #10-166), Cunera Buys (#10-209), and Catherine McNair (#10-146) in 2010.

Separated Materials

Approximately 30 photos transferred to photographic files. Items transferred to audiovisual collection consist of vacation films taken during a visit by Frey to Florida in 1972-1973, an audio recording of Frey's birthday celebration in 1971, several interviews and traffic safety reports from the 1960s-1970s, a 20th Century Fox board meeting with Princess Grace in 1977, a presentation of the Ford Pinto by Lee Iacocca (n.d.), videocassettes of class lectures by Frey, footage of Frey's 2003 trip to the Middle East, and some unidentified Bell & Howell footage. A total of 40 items have been transferred to the audiovisual collection.
