History Department Student Papers and Examination Books
Scope and Contents
This series contains undergraduate and graduate student papers and examination books from various courses offered by the Northwestern University's History Department in 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1977. The bulk of the undergraduate materials, including examination books and papers written in lieu of final examinations, are from the survey courses "European Civilization" (B01) and "History of the United States" (B10). Additional papers, examinations, and course assignments come from from "The United States Since the 1890s" (C18), and from miscellaneous freshman, upperclass, and graduate seminars. The bulk of the graduate papers are from "The Literature of Early American History and History" (D12) and "The Literature of English History of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" (D64). The undergraduate papers and examination books are graded and span the range from academic excellence to failure, thereby documenting contemporary evaluations of student examination performance and writing abilities, as well as course content and pedagogy.
