Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Sara Moore Collection is comprised of 12 boxes and spans the years 1910-1968. The materials include personal and professional correspondence, illustrations, manuscripts and typescripts, travel documents, mementos, and photographs.

The collection is organized into six series: news career; personal papers and artwork; Ford Peace Ship and aftermath; travel and M. Wańkowicz; oversized drawings and objects. The News Career series consists of two boxes and one oversize box. Included in this series are numerous brittle newspaper clippings housed in protective Mylar sleeves, 8.5x11 in. photocopies of newspaper articles, folders and envelopes, and large duplications of microfilmed newspapers pages (oversized box 12).

The majority of the four box Personal Papers and Artwork series is made up of drafts, typescripts and submission copies of Moore’s plays, illustrations, advertisements, and short stories. This series also contains Moore’s collections of reference materials, recipes, notes, and correspondence. Materials relating to the Ford Peace Ship and Aftermath are contained in one box. This series is comprised of articles written by Moore and other members of the Peace Ship press corps as well as resources which detail daily life onboard the Peace Ship. These include photographs, newsletters, correspondences, booklets and notes.

The Travel and M. Wańkowicz series spans two boxes and covers Moore’s extensive travels. Items found in this series include currency, journals, correspondence, address books, maps, photographs, film, scrapbook pages, postcards and other ephemera. This series also contains newspaper clippings and corresponded relating to Moore’s efforts to advocate for the release of her friend Melchior Wańkowicz, a Polish journalist and author who was arrested in Poland under Soviet censorship laws.

The Oversized Drawings series is housed in one large box and consists of 138 original illustrations. many of the illustrations were published in Moore’s Maiden Meditations series and consist mostly of pencil and charcoal on paper. Lastly, the Objects series contains a number of souvenirs and mementoes collected by Moore. These include a bullet which nearly killed her as a baby, a wax seal belonging to Kaiser Wilhelm II, a magnifying glass, and other small objects.
