Joseph Medill's will, 1894 - 1898

Scope and Contents

Three printed copies of the will: two copies with the handwritten approval of the probate judge and with probate documents dated May 2, 1899; and a third labelled "Robert W. Patterson - marked copy" with notes as to taxes due.

The will consists of the following:

  • Original will apportioning real estate to his two daughters, the rest to be divided equally (August 22, 1894)
  • First codicil, providing for annuities to two relatives; bequests to six relatives plus Thomas Madill of Ireland and Joseph Medill Sheehan; $15,000 for a statue of Benjamin Franklin to be presented to the Chicago Typographical Union; and bequests to seven "fellow workers" (September 22, 1894)
  • Second codicil, providing that no one inheriting Tribune stock may sell it without the approval of others inheriting Tribune stock (December 8, 1894)
  • Third codicil, revoking the statue of Benjamin Franklin, dropping J.M. Oliver as an executor and substituting William G. Beale (April 14, 1898)
  • Fourth codicil, turning Tribune stock over to R.W. Patterson, R.S. McCormick, and W.G. Beale as trustees; income to go to two daughters; trust to expire 21 years after Medill's death (May 5, 1898)
