Scope and Contents

This folder consists largely of correspondence among Macfarlane, E.M. Antrim, James G. Stahlman (president of ANPA), Eugene MacKinnon (chairman of the AHPA's special standing committee), and others, about relations with the Guild around the country. Clippings about Guild contracts and strikes in other cities and at the Chicago Times and the Hearst papers in Chicago. Significant items include:

  • 1938-04: Chicago Guild News headline "Col. McCormick yields to guild" (about the notice posted in 1938-04-04--see Box 1, folder 4). Letter "To employees of the Chicago Tribune" 1938-04-05 from Harry Wohl, president of the Chicago Newspaper Guild. Other Chicago Guild publications
  • 1938-10: "Tribunit" volume 1 number 2, publication of the Tribune Guild unit. Virginia Gardner, chairman; Thomas Gorman, secretary
  • 1938-12: Guild release reporting support from Civil Liberties Committee headed by John Happ, president, and Ira Lattimer, secretary. Support also from Prof. George Axtelle of Northwstern University, vice president of the American Federation of Teachers
  • 1939-01: letter from Don Stevens of the Guild to McCormick asking for a meeting; advice from Weymouth Kirkland of the law firm; McCormick's reply: talk to department heads involved
  • J. Loy ("Pat") Maloney memo of 1939-01-27 regarding government pressure to deal with the Guild
  • 1939-04-04: another letter from Stevens to McCormick
  • 1939-05: correspondence with NLRB regarding a hearing
  • Separate sheets: 1938-04: letter to Tribune employees from Virginia Gardner, chairman of Tribune unit of the Guild. Regarding of J.A. Murphy and James E. Dalinghaus
