    General

Some of these negatives were originally housed in envelopes imprinted "The Enterprise Optical Mfg. Co.", a firm founded by Alvah Curtis Roebuck in Chicago in 1896. (At that time, Roebuck was already a partner in Sears, Roebuck and Company.) Many of the negatives are marked as having been copyrighted in 1906 by Roebuck. (At least one of the images could have been taken no later than 1905.) It is reasonable to guess that the negatives of the same size but without the copyright notice also emanate from Roebuck's firm.
