Original artwork, 1929 - 1931

 Item — Box: 332, Folder: 1, Item: 1

Scope and Contents

Four 4-panel strips, all signed "King." The subject matter of all 4 strips involves newspaper want ads; the characters presented include Walt Wallet, Phyllis Blossom Wallet, and Rachel (their African American domestic servant).

  • Phyllis cuts out a newspaper recipe for corn fritters, which Walt agrees to try; Rachel thinks that the cut-out item was an ad seeking a domestic servant, and scrubs the kitchen floor instead of just mopping it (1929)
  • At work, Walt places an ad for a stenographer; Phyllis advises him to look to his appearance (1931; stamped on the verso 1930-12-19; title "Gasoline Alley--homely advice"; inscribed by King to Chesser Campbell)
  • Walt notices an item cut out of the newspaper; on the other side is an ad for a lakeside cottage, in which Walt takes an interest (1931; incomplete stamp on the verso 1931-04; marked "rush 2 days late")
  • Walt inspects a cottage advertised in the newspaper (1931; stamped on the verso 1931-04-25; inscribed "rush 2 days late")
  • Dates

    • 1929 - 1931
