Biographical / Historical
Rose Elizabeth "Libby" Cleveland was the acting first lady of the United States (1885-1886) until her brother, President Grover Cleveland, married in June of 1886. She was a teacher at the Collegiate Institute in Lafayette, Indiana, and at Muncy Seminary (Pennsylvania). She began a relationship with Evangeline Marrs Simpson at age 44, and they lived in Bagni di Lucca, Italy together for 8 years before her death. She lived from 1846 to 1918.
