Biographical / Historical
Pauline Elisabeth Ottilie Luise of Wied (pseudonym: Carmen Sylva) was a German-Romanian noblewoman (daughter of Hermann, Prince of Wied, and Princess Marie of Nassau). She married Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (Carol I or Charles I of Romania) in November 1869. He became King of Romania, and Elisabeth became Queen, in 1881 following the declaration of Romania as a kingdom. Elisabeth was the founder of the National Society for the Blind, supported higher education for Romanian women, and wrote poetry, folk-lore, and ballads (under the name Carmen Sylva). She lived from 1843 to 1916.
