Biographical / Historical
Sir Austen Henry Layard was an English archaeologist, art historian, collector, and politician, known for excavating Nimrud and Nineveh and the library of Ashurbanipal (he sold his accounts of these excavations). He was a the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 1852, and Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1877 to 1880. He lived from 1817 to 1894.
