  • Warren Gamaliel Harding to Robert R. McCormick, 1920-09-10 (IX-63 box 1 folder 16): "I regret exceedingly that I have not sooner complied with your request to return the enclosed matter which was kindly sent to me in your letter of August 27th. I read it with a great deal of interest and with, I convess, some degree of consternaqtion. I appreciate your kindness in giving me the benefit of your foreign correspondent, and shall hope to hear from you again when you have matters that you think I should know."
  • Warren Gamaliel Harding to Robert R. McCormick, 1920-10-22 (IX-63 box 1 folder 17): "I find that in the stress of matters here I have not acknowledged your note of September 29th, or returned the copies of the very interesting and valuable letters of Mr. Clayton. They are wonderfully illuminating and my only regret is that I am not given time to study them in connection with the newspaper statements with whicy they are so significantly at variance."
  • Warren Gamaliel Harding to Robert R. McCormick, 1921-12-10 (IX-63 box 1 folder 18): "I am writing to acknowledge your telegram of December 7th. I fully appreciate the importance of the suggestion you make therein. You will agree, I am sure, that there is never any hesitancy about the promotion of our most cordial relations with our Northern neighbor."
  • Warren Gamaliel Harding to Robert R. McCormick, 1922-01-23 (IX-63 box 1 folder 19): "I have your letter of January fourteenth, and appreciate all that you say therein. You will be interestd to know that we are already negotiating with Great Britain relating to the matter of a treaty between Canada and the United States covering the necessary provisions to carry out the recommendations of the Internastional Waterways Commission on the lakes to ocean water-way through the St. Lawrence River. ... I am not ready to say at this time whether the two projects; that is, shipping remuneration and lakes to ocean water-way, can be tied together in a suitable recommendation to Congress. ... I recognize the departure which the Tribune will be called upono to make in supporting any so-called ship subsidy plan. ... At any rate, we are face to face with a proposition, whether we shall build a really great American Merchant Marine.
