Abstract

The James M. O'Neill files contain correspondence, pamphlets, and circulars which were collected by Mr. O'Neill during his presidency of the National Association of Academic Teachers of Public Speaking in 1915, and during his six years as editor of the Quarterly Journal of Public Speaking and the Quarterly Journal of Speech Education, 1915 - 1920.

Arrangement

The pamphlets and circulars contained in the O'Neill files are few and of secondary importance. The correspondence is paramount. This body of material contains letters addressed to James M. O'Neill and copies of letters directed by him in his official capacities.

If the Association, and its official organ, the Quarterly Journal, are important as they relate to speech education in America, then the O'Neill files are invaluable.

Within each classification the index file is arranged: 1) alphabetically by author; 2) alphabetically by addressee; and 3) chronologically.

Classifications VII - XII represent material not sufficiently important to merit complete indexing. Report and indexing compiled by graduate student in Speech James A. McLaren June 3, 1953. The original correspondence card index was photocopied and appended to Box 1 in March, 1995.
