Abstract

This collection contains material related to the libel suit, Henry Ford versus The Tribune Company, dating to 1916-1919. The suit concerned the Chicago Tribune editorial of June 23, 1916, "Ford is an Anarchist."

Arrangement

Arrangement completed prior to receiving collection from the McCormick Foundation. This arrangement retains the original order of the Kirkland & Ellis files as received, even though this means that the materials are not in chronological order.

Custodial History

In March, 1988, Sam Fifer of Isham, Lincoln and Beale called the archives to report the discovery of 25 packing boxes of old Tribune files that had come from the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis via Reuben & Proctor. Marilyn Traum and John McCutcheon examined and found that six of the cartons dealt with the Henry Ford versus The Tribune Company libel suit of 1916-1919 (over the June 23, 1916, editorial "Ford is an Anarchist"), on which the Tribune Company Archives held very little material. The remainder of the material involved the Tribune's fight with the William Hale Thompson regime.

Fifer sent the material to the Tribune Company Archives on April 8, 1988. The Ford papers were processed in January and July, 1990.

The materials were transferred to new boxes. When their condition permitted, the original Kirkland & Ellis folders or binders were used.

Kirkland & Ellis' somewhat sketchy inventory of its boxes is included with a copy of this summary in Box 1.
