Scope and Contents
At a dinner attended by Stanton R. Cook and John McCutcheon in the fall of 1984, Robert E. Page of the Sun-Times took some delight in telling of his friendship with Mrs. Maryland McCormick and of her "fabulous" scrapbooks.
With the help of Hope (Mrs. Brooks) McCormick, McCutcheon arranged to call on Mrs. McCormick on Feb. 18, 1985. Together they spent at least two hours going through the scrapbooks. At the end she said, "Why don't you take them. They belong in the Tribune archives. Nobody else wants them." McCutcheon agreed to take them and paste in a number of loose clippings and to get in touch with her on his return from a trip in April.
On April 19, 1985 McCutcheon wrote to Mrs. McCormick. Getting no response, he phoned on April 29 and learned that Mrs. McCormick was in Columbus Hospital with pneumonia. She never regained enough health to discuss the scrapbooks. She died on July 21, 1985.
