Arrangement completed prior to receiving the collection from the McCormick Foundation.

Custodial History

Several cartons of Chicago Tribune Charities files were sent to the Tribune Company Archives in 1985-05 and 1985-06 by Ann Dalesandro and Bob Robinson in Marketing. They appear to have come maily from the files of Arch Ward (president of Chicago Tribune Charities until his death in 1955); George Strickler (president 1967/1970 and executive director 1970/1973); and Luke Carroll (executive director 1973/1976).

A second installment was received in 1986-05 from Nick Goodban, exectuive director since 1983, and a third in 1987-04 from Darlene Collins of the Chicago Tribune Charities office.

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.

Separated Materials

Some of the material received with these collections was discarded (duplicate programs; requisitions; International Newspaper Promotion Association newsletters; unidentified photographs). Some of the material has been filed elsewhere:

  • XVIII-5 vertical file: general administrative material, including minutes of the board and lists of donations
  • XVIII-6: Golden Gloves finals programs for 1951/1956, 1958/1961, 19645 and 1984. Intercity programs for 1950, 1953 and 1961. International programs for 1949/1951, 1953/1954, and 1956
