Chicago tribune. Finance Department microfilm records

 Collection

Scope and Contents

Microfilm of payroll records, paid vouchers, and cancelled checks involving the Chicago Tribune, WGN, the Chicago Tribune Press Service, the Chicago Tribune Building Corporation, and other subsidiaries for periods before the Tribune Company was created (in 1968). (In those years the Chicago Tribune's Finance Department handled the subsidiaries.)

The payroll records constitute the only remaining record of people who worked for the Tribune in the early years (beginning in 1892).

The vouchers are of no archival significance. The checks in payment of bills are of no interest, and the cancelled dividend checks add nothing to the information already on hand in the Tribune Company Archive.

Custodial History

On 1987-07-27, Michael Castrogiovanni of the Chicago Tribune Finance Department asked the Tribune Company Archives to examine two microfilm storage cabinets in room 701, to select what should be preserved; the remainder was to be destroyed.

The cabinets contained between 1,200 and 1,300 rolls of microfilm. All of the material dealing with payrolls was retained, because they extend back to 1892, and personnel records for the earlier years had not been preserved. Samples of other records were also brought to the Archives. The remainder was presumably destroyed.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.
