Scope and Contents

This collection of papers, created and maintained by the Chicago Tribune's law firm, Kirkland & Ellis, reflects the firm's handling of various matters for members of the Patterson family. Although much of this material is tangentially concerned with the McCormick-Patterson Trust, these papers deal not with the management of the trust itself, but rather with the family's ownership of shares in the Trust, and its alottment of proceeds from the Trust. The collection also includes information about the family's dealings with the firm in matters not related to the Trust. Much of the activity recorded here is utlimately related to the result of the divorce of Alice Higinbotham Patterson and Joseph Medill Patterson ("10080-W-7. Alice Higinbotham Patterson vs. Joseph Medill Patterson"), and concerns their three daughters Josephine, Elinor and Alicia.

Abstract

Arrangement

The materials were originally housed in a series of large expanding folders; these folders typically contained a mixture of loose materials and sub-folders. Each such expanding folder was labeled with a classification number (of uncertin meaning) assigned by the law firm, plus typed and/or handwritten information. (The relevant portions of the expanding folders have been preserved.) The expanding folders show evidence of curation by various hands over the time of their use.

The arrangement of materials in this finding aid reflects the order in which they were found: first by the classification number written on each large expanding folder, then by sequential numbers assigned to folders with the same classification number, and finally by sub-folders (when present).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.
