Biographical / Historical
The New York Daily news was founded by Joseph Medill Patterson in 1919, the first daily paper printed in tabloid format. It was since its foundation owned by the Tribune Company.
The root causes of the 1990/1991 strike of the Daily news by eight of ten unions are many and stretch back several years, as detailed in Richard Vigilante's book Strike: the Daily News war and the future of American labor (1994). Both sides had been preparing for a strike for more than a year. The immediate cause was a dispute on that arose on October 25, 1990, over whether a member of the drivers' union claiming a medical disablity could sit down while working on the job. This led to a walk-out of the drivers, followed by members of other unions.
The strike was effectively ended in early 1991 by the sale of the Daily news to Robert Maxwell.
