Scope and Contents

This series consists of photographs of models of six inventions of Robert McCormick (1780-1846), best known as the inventor of a reaping machine. According to material in this collection, the models were made by Leander James McCormick before 1894. The series includes correspondence and other material related to Leander McCormick's donation of the original models and related materials to the University of Virginia.

  • Horse power (a grist mill)
  • Power transmitter
  • Hempbrake (2 different inventions)

    There are no restrictions on use of the materials in the department for research; all patrons must comply with federal copyright regulations. This collection is stored off-site and requires two business days advance notice for retrieval.     This collection was originally two separate items in the Tribune Company Archives: II-56 (in the "framed pictures" collection; consisting of the original photographs); and II-56a (copies of the photographs, correspondence and other information).
