Post-Partum Hemorrhage, Part Two, 1941
Scope and Contents
Warning: contains graphic images of childbirth procedures.
This silent, black and white film shows two scenarios of postpartum hemorrhage. In the first scenario, ergonovine is administered to prevent excess bleeding. After clots have been removed, the cervix clamped, and the uterus anteflexed, the uterus is massaged with vibratory compression, and packed with gauze. The woman responds well. In the second scenario, these standard procedures do not stop the blood flow, and the administration of glucose, saline solutions, and a blood transfusion are discussed.
It should be noted that real obstetric procedures are intercut with short dramatizations, including a person dressed in skeleton garb pointing at an hourglass to convey time is of the essence during the critical treatment of postpartum hemorrhage.
A production of Joseph B. De Lee, M.D., and M. Edward Davis, M.D. The film we see here is part two of a three part film.
