Louis E. Schmidt papers

Collection consists of three volumes: one notebook and two scrapbooks created by urologist and professor Louis E. Schmidt. The two scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings on two major topics: public health efforts to combat venereal disease in 1930s Chicago (many of which involve Schmidt through his work as a member of the Chicago Board of Health, including the passage of an Illinois law requiring venereal disease tests before marriage) and the expulsion of Schmidt from the Chicago Medical Society in 1929 for working with the Public Health Institute, a venereal disease clinic that advertised its services, at a time when the medical profession saw advertising medical services as unethical. The notebook (box 2) contains notes taken by Schmidt while pursuing postgraduate study in urology and pathology in Berlin in 1896. A handwritten list of Schmidt's publications from 1901-1910 is tucked into the notebook.
