Content Description

Correspondence, writings, and personal papers of Nathan Smith Davis, Jr., Professor of Medicine and Dean (1901-1907) of Northwestern University Medical School. Much of the correspondence pertains to academics, business, and finance at the medical school. Writings include a lecture about a United States Senate bill on vivisection, an essay on British Prime Minister William Gladstone, and Davis's student notes on lectures given by Professors Marcus Hatfield and James Jewell at Chicago Medical College in 1881. Also includes certificates awarded to Davis by various professional organizations.

Abstract

Correspondence, writings, and personal papers of Nathan Smith Davis, Jr., Professor of Medicine and Dean (1901-1907) of Northwestern University Medical School.

Custodial History

Most of the material in this collection was removed from the papers of Davis's father, Nathan Smith Davis, Sr., during the processing of that collection. Some items belonging to Davis, Jr., may still be present in Davis, Sr.'s papers.

Many items seem to have been organized and labeled by Nathan Smith Davis III, son of N. S. Davis, Jr., and may have come to the library through him.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Source and date of acquisition unknown. Group of letters written by Davis donated by Steven J. Stryker, MD, Professor Emeritus of Surgery (Gastrointestinal), on December 6, 2021.

Condition Description

Much of the correspondence and other papers were conserved but still show signs of water damage and mold staining. The collection as a whole has expected deterioration and wear.
