Content Description

Personal and professional papers of Herman L. Kretschmer, a graduate of Northwestern University Pharmacy (PhG 1900) and Medical (MD 1904) Schools and pioneering urologist and surgeon. Mainly consists of 107 bound manuscripts of Kretschmer's writings, both typescript with manuscript corrections and fully handwritten, as well as 13 notebooks kept by Kretschmer as a student at Northwestern and while doing postgraduate study in Vienna and Berlin. The collection also includes a memorial plaque and the catalog cards for the Herman L. Kretschmer Collection of rare books, which were transferred to the library's rare book collection at the time of donation.

Collection also includes restricted records related to the circa 1947 surgical treatment of a woman for cysts on her kidney by physicians including Kretschmer, Tate Mason of Seattle, Earle R. Hall of Vancouver, and those at the Mayo Clinic, between 1943 and 1951. This includes correspondence related to her inability to pay Kretschmer's bill for surgery.

Abstract

Papers of urologist and surgeon Herman L. Kretschmer, mainly consisting of 107 bound manuscripts on various urologial topics (ca. 1909-1931), and 13 notebooks kept by Kretschmer as a student at Northwestern University School of Pharmacy and Medical School (ca. 1899-1906).

Arrangement

Bound manuscripts are arranged in given volume order, which does not reflect chronological or alphabetical order. Student notebooks are arranged in rough chronological order.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Bound manuscripts were donated by Kretschmer and were accessioned into the collection in January 1952.

Condition Description

Bound manuscripts have red rot and expected wear. Student notebooks have detached boards and brittle paper.
