Biography

Campbell was born on December 12, 1897 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and served in the United States Navy, 1917-1918. Upon his graduation from the University of Michigan in 1921, he began as a subscription salesman for the Paris edition of the Chicago Tribune. In May 1922 he became a classified advertising salesman in the Chicago office. He was advertising manager for the paper from 1935 to 1949. Following the death of Robert R. McCormick in 1955, Campbell was named President of the Tribune Company and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, positions which he held at the time of his death on July 10, 1960.
