Biography

The former Maryland Mathison Hooper became Col. McCormick's second wife in 1944 after she was divorced from her first husband, society figure Henry Hooper Jr. The Hoopers, who were married nearly 22 years, had occupied one of the homes on the McCormick estate, Cantigny Farm, near Wheaton. After Amy McCormick's death, a triple strand of pearls she wore was divided into three necklaces and given to her three closest friends, one of whom was Mrs. Hooper. At the time of their marriage, Col. McCormick was 64 and Maryland McCormick was 47.

When they were in Chicago, Mrs. McCormick was known as one of the city's most popular society figures, and the annual Christmas party she and her husband hosted at their Astor Street home was considered the social event of the season.

Mrs. McCormick served as a delegate to the Inter-American Press Association's annual meeting in 1953 in Mexico City and also wrote columns for the Tribune.

After Col. McCormick's death in 1955, Mrs. McCormick moved to Washington, where she served as vice president of the Washington Times-Herald.
