Biography
Samuel W. Jameson was born on August 9, 1936 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the family later moved to Ohio. He received a B.S. in journalism from Northwestern University in 1958; in his undergraduate years he was a reporter and assistant managing editor for the Daily northwestern. After receiving an M.S. in journalism from Northwestern in 1959, Jameson joined the staff of the Chicago tribune.
Jameson was drafted into the U.S. Army in June, 1960; and in November of that year was transferred to Tokyo to work on Pacific Stars and Stripes. On release from the Army in June, 1962, on extended leave from the Tribune, he enrolled in the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies to learn Japanese. The next year he returned to Chicago briefly, and was appointed head of the Tribune’s Tokyo bureau in June, 1963.
Jameson moved to the Los Angeles times in July, 1981 as head of its Tokyo bureau; adding in August, 1987 the role of reporter on the Asian economy. He left the Times in March, 1996 to become a free-lance reporter and researcher. He wrote for the Asia times, Sankei Shimbun and Asian business, and other publications; and served at the Policy Science Institute of Saitama University, the Institute for International Policy Studies, and the Yomiuri Research Institute. Jameson also taught a course on Japan at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Samuel W. Jameson died in Tokyo on April 19, 2013.
