Biography

Kirkpatrick began at the Chicago Tribune as a reporter in 1938. After service in World War II, he returned to the Tribune in 1945. He was appointed day city editor in 1958, city editor in 1961, assistant managing editor for local news in 1963, managing editor in 1965, executive editor and vice president of the Chicago Tribune Company in 1967, director of the Company in 1972, and executive vice president of the Company in 1977. He ended his career as chairman and chief executive officer of the Tribune Company.
