Biography

Jessie Gillespie Willing (1888-1972) was an American illustrator. During her illustration career, she used her middle name, Gillespie, as her artist's surname.

Working mostly in New York City, Gillespie's career as an illustrator began in 1906 or 1907, and continued until the late 1960s. Her earliest works were small silhouettes, used in magazines and newspapers. Starting in the early 1920s, Willing illustrated Girl Scout handbooks, pamphlets and advertisements. She also worked for the Child Health Organization, and created the character "Cho-cho." Gillespie then illustrated children's books and became well known for her work on The Birds' Christmas Carol, by Kate Douglas Wiggin, in 1941. For the later part of her career, Gillespie designed and illustrated catalogues for the jewelry company of J.E. Caldwell and Co. and designed pamphlets for the YMCA, the Episcopal Church, and various other charity organizations.
