Scope and Contents

Series 1 contains articles, manuscript and typescript radio program scripts, essays, talks, lectures, manuscript concert program notes and other writings by Clark in his many roles as a conductor, BBC radio music director, writer and music administrator.

Series 2 contains concert programs conductor or organized by Clark as well as others he attended. Series 3, divided into three sub-series 1. Correspondence: containing letters to or from Edward Clark as well as a catalog of Clark letters in the British Museum; 2. Biographical materials, news clippings, photographs and ephemera which also includes a photocopy of Clark’s autograph album, a diary entry by Luigi Dallapiccola and catalogs of Elizabeth Lutyens’ compositions; and 3. Poster and citations: consisting of an oversize concert poster and a citation for Clark’s 1954 Schöenberg medal.

Series 4 contains records of organizations for which Clark was a member, officer and/or founder including the Association of British Musicians, International Society of Contemporary Music, the North East Regional Orchestra, and the International Music Association among others. One folder of materials from the records of the Association of British Musicians is actually authored by Elizabeth Lutyens– to whom Clark was married.

Series 5 consists of two scrapbooks documenting Clark’s career, two diaries from Clark’s tenure as BBC Newcastle Music Director, and 26 pocket notebooks containing notes on composers, musical works, and performance times.
