General

This collection of slides was assembled in the 1970s and 1980s, chiefly using contributions from individual researchers. The slides were originally described on a set of index cards, but these were eventually replaced by printed guides. Each slide in the collection was assigned a unique identifier consisting of three two-digit numerals separated by full stops: a code for the country, a code for the subject category, and a sequential number. (The construction of identifiers, including lists of codes for countries and categories, is described in detail in the guides.) The category codes were revised at some time between the publication of the 3rd and 5th editions of the guide, and all slides were assigned new numbers. (The original and revised numbers have the same structure, which can be the source of confusion.) Traces of the earlier numbering scheme can be found throughout the slides: some slides and index cards bear both numbers. (The old number is not always obscured.)
